Koh Tao (Turtle Island) is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand and is part of the Chumphon Archipelago. It covers an area of about 21 km2 (8 sq mi) and is surrounded by stunning coral reefs and abundant marine life in clear, warm water. Koh Tao is one of the world’s most popular diving destinations with over 130 species of hard corals, and over 223 species of reef fishes belonging to 53 families. Koh Tao is famous for it’s Whale shark sightings all year round. The Whale shark is a filter feeder and one of only three known filter-feeding shark species (along with the basking shark and the megamouth shark). It feeds on plankton including copepods, krill, fish eggs, Christmas Island red crab larvae and small nektonic life, such as small squid or fish. It also feeds on clouds of eggs during mass spawning of fish and corals. They are known to grow up to about 12 meters and the largest confirmed individual had a length of 18.8 meters. Here on Koh Tao, they are usually between 3-5 meters. They are most commonly seen at Chumpon Pinnacles, Southwest Pinnacles and Sail Rock.
